We all had many choices this morning once we finally dropped our feet onto the floor. We chose to work out or go straight to the shower; coffee or orange juice; or both. Heck, we even had the choice of dropping our feet on the floor or just staying in bed all day. I could go on and on with all the choices that we encounter on a daily basis, but there is one choice that I know many men take for granted everyday. WILL I BE A SHEEP, SHEEPDOG, OR WOLF.
In one of our recent meetings, we discussed the difference between these three personalities (sheep, sheepdog, or wolf). We read through an excerpt from the book by RET LT. COL. Dave Grossman of the US Army entitled “On Killing.” In this book Dave Grossman shares with the reader his take on violent crime, why it happens, and the preparedness that is needed. He puts everyone into the categories of the SHEEP, SHEEPDOG, and WOLF. A copy of the article can be found here: http://mwkworks.com/onsheepwolvesandsheepdogs.html
The ‘Sheep’ are average people who choose to be in denial of violent crime thus never preparing themselves or those around them for protection when it happens. They are ones that are kind, gentle, and productive. As Dave Grossman says, “If you want to be a sheep, then you can be a sheep and that is okay, but you must understand the price you pay. When the wolf comes, you and your loved ones are going to die if there is not a sheepdog there to protect you.”
The ‘Sheepdog” is the protector. He is the one that lives to protect the sheep and confront the wolf. The sheepdog is always prepared, trained, and able to protect. The sheep can often be intimidated by the sheepdog, but they know he will never hurt them. He is only there to protect.
Finally, the ‘Wolf’. The wolf is the one that feeds on the sheep without mercy. Lets face it, most of us will never be the wolf and its not even a choice, but for some it is. The ‘wolf’ exists and we must not live in denial of that fact.
Lots of great things came from this discussion as you can imagine. Men were recognizing that the ‘choice’ has been there all along and many had just been choosing without knowing or just simply forgetting what they were. Many of the men that were a part of this discussion will be attending a CWP class along with other types of mental and physical trainings so that they can be a better prepared ‘sheepdog’.
To be a sheep it takes nothing, you are without trying. To be a sheepdog it takes hardwork, sacrifice, preparedness, and a love and passion for those that you will be protecting.
What will you choose?
